this was begun a couple days before la dia de los muertos. since then, i've spent about an hour and a half per day finishing it. right now, i'm focusing on ways to preserve the original gestural/expressive qualities of the sketch in the drawing...without making it too sloppy. i really enjoy making it work, or polishing a rough sketch. still an adventure each time, but i like juxtaposing fancy-schmancy photoshop glow to drab pencil drawings.

hope you enjoy,

this squish face is a little doodle from a paused moment in return of the king of mr. samwise sleeping on the steps to mordor. i had no intention of taking this short sketch anywhere, but the skewed anatomy grew on me. i eventually decided i'd let go of the reins this time, to see how tall a cliff off my horses take the carriage. turned out to be pretty fun.

{abstraktion}

this marks my first abstract commission. this is for one of my buddies, gene, at second life...and he wanted it executed in my favorite format: 12x36. this piece has REALLY opened my eyes, as i've always pushed away abstract art. purely stubborn of me. there are pieces throughout my background that have caught my attention, but still pretty much hit or miss.

these prelims lead up to the final oil-painted piece to be completed over the next week...

hope everyone's well!

{good reads}

i recently finished a nice satire entitled, "survivor" by mr. chuck palahniuk. pretty entertaining, and i highly recommend it.
currently, i'm enjoying naomi klein's "shock doctrine: the rise of disaster capitalism". wow. this book is heavy in it's torture reveling introduction, and that's just the set up for the whole "hurricane katrina, iraq war" types of disaster capitalism. thought i was biting off more than i could chew by reading one of those "political" books. it's nice, and not nearly as wordy as i thought it might've been.

also, later today i'll be in the haight at villains undergoing the first round of cut&paste

{NEW SITE COMING SOON!}

here's the layout. i've been filling the cracks of my free time with developing (hopefully moving forward in the right direction with) my identity -- a whole suite of visuals to be mailed/marketed/etc. i'll let everyone know when the site launches.

also, there's some new work in the oven as we speak: a couple commissions and some personal stuff.

i'll be out of the studio this weekend, but will be reachable.

couple more notes: HAPPY FRIGGIN NEW YEAR! and HAPPY INAUGURATION!

{mezzanine sf cont'd}

the show was a success, and will be part of my annual schedule. i sold the piece an hour after i got there. the producer, irene, told me there are three of these(shows) a year. word!

i had to deal with some family business and wasn't able to finish all i wanted and instead, cleaned the "ya heard" piece: added some more color, made a little more sense of the hair.

i'm working on deepsixpaint.com, and it's print-purchase feature through paypal. i'll let y'all know when it's ready.
in the meantime, "ya heard" can be purchased: $300 mounted/$200 unmounted as an 18"x18" satin paper print. i may have some 24"s in the near future. i know i'll be getting one for the house.

a doodle, more or less to get the feel for which road i'll travel to this gigantic show december 6th here in sf. i think it's gonna be three pieces or so of nothing important, just fun. i've been struggling with that lately -- having fun and not relaxing. i'll be posting details shortly so anyone in the bay area can swing by. should be nutz. i know there are 80 fashion designers, 150 painters/photographers and 8 dj's. stay tuned.

oh, we might be going to see that new movie jcvd tonight. anybody see it already?

safe weekend, y'all!

{afternoon tea}

earl grey or long island: you chose;) i hope things are well with everyone, especially now that the countdown has begun until our victor is inaugurated. FTW! someone said this to me the other day, and it really felt good to hear: (he) had never voted in a presidential election and won. i couldn't help but identify with him, as my 26year old demographic has only been able to vote since the 2000 election. satisfaction at last.

politics aside, i've been cooking up some fun designs for the team at store101 again. after seeing the print process of my gorilla design midstage, i saw new directions i wanted to take my own apparel, with graphic shapes. their meaning=nothing. that's the best part. just something to gaze uponst;)

i'm also finalizing a project with kyle cross at gorilla riot with more treats in the works.

this is supplementing an article about art mentors and their protégés. this was a really tight deadline i had to crank out and didn't get to fully address the line drawing, particularly the full composition and the silhouettes dueling in the background. all in all, i'm fine with it. 7.29.2008

{gorilla riot bizznass}

this geisha fighting a gorilla is some of the concept work i'm developing for kyle cross at gorilla riot. i'm going after this epic even-matched battle with an elegant dance of survival. additionally, the poo is blowing up at store101 in gainesville, fl. class is in session. keep your eyes peeled for a duet painting/t shirt for the above piece.
and to everyone asking about comic-con, i wasn't able to attend this year, but will be in attendance with the critically acclaimed erik jones next year. i'm not sure any one soul can prepare for pure terror. it should be something of which the likes of past, present & future attendees have never seen. we'll see.

{farewell}

i just got back to san francisco after an emergency flight back home to virginia on tuesday to see bama for the last time. bama is the name i gave my grandmother as the very first of her grandchildren. uncle jack and i left sfo with our fingers crossed we would make it in time to say goodbye. she held on until thursday morning, without ever waking up, when we got the call she had a rough night. by the grace of her fighting will, she let the family stand by her side as she passed.

above: i painted her portrait as a gift to my mother for her 50th birthday three years ago.
next: we all celebrated after the funeral service, each of us wearing one of her famed bandannas.

may you sleep well, bama.

hello all, this is the counterpart to the below post: a point of view towards the freelancing side of illustration.
beginning with the third image:
:: the second concept sketch which transformed into the whole 'tree v. robot' theme
:: colored sketch
:: final drawing
:: final illo

i'd like to add(again) a big thanks to mr. dennis brown. i hope nyc is treating you the way it should.

**i've tried fixing the script so that the image opens with your browser. i haven't had any trouble with that type problem ever. if anyone has a resolution, please, please let me know. much thanks!

big thanks to bags for getting me an editorial gig with imagine fx. this image is part of a two-part series which compares freelancing(the robot in the back) to full time staffing(the tree character opposite the bot). i wasn't terribly happy with this image because of inadequate rendering, in part due to a tight deadline, but... i'm very happy to be doing editorials, finally!... and with imagine fx!

above::
1. first thoughts on full-timing
2. first sketch of the new concept (rooted, healthy, immobile tree vs. hovering, mobile, cutting-edge bot)
3. color study
4. final linework (less illustrated text)

{heavy hitterz show}

last saturday, the show opened up and was a huge success. i decided to do a limited edition of 20 prints of my more popular (it seems) piece, tosca. i dropped tosca off at the gallery on wednesday night, mounted on a pine and masonite box, like i did for my senior thesis. i sold the first print (1 of 20) in the opening hours of the show and have more people interested. it was recommended to me that i put a $400 price tag on each of these prints (signed + numbered). since the first one sold, i figured i should sell the rest at the same price. i believe four more people from the show are purchasing tosca.
if anyone is available in purchasing a limited edition print of tosca at this time, please email me with a name, phone number and address.
cheers!

{blast from the past}

Who has too much time on their hands?
I always liked the drawing on the debater piece, but it was my very first assignment I attempted in Photoshop my Junior year and hated the colors. I may have butchered the comp, but the assignment called for a spot illustration... seems a square will fit virtually any layout.

{ringling logo}

A while back I'd submitted various images to contribute to Ringling's(would be) logo campaign. They've said that the school's logo should be able to represent the students' experiences and additionally, it should be able to cater to any specific function or event at Ringling.
"Silence Falls", my illustration of Alexander Litvinenko was included at the bottom left of this particular logo. Nothing huge, but pretty exciting for me!

Here's a link to the article.

{revised site}

After moving out here to San Francisco, I found myself without my studio supplies. Next move: clean up my website, resumé and business card. Also, I have a new logo loosely based on my signature. I cleaned up my font situation from Chromosome to Arial. There are still some alignment issues with text and of course, there needs to be more artwork, but I've been busy freelancing (no complaints here). I've also added captions to the work.
My next personal project will be a continuation of my thesis: The Return of Ulysses.

S'more Coverage of the Below Illustration...

I was tracking my blog hits and was lead to a Chechen web site where my
illustration of the death of the Russian spy, Alexander Litvinenko is getting some coverage... good or bad coverage, I'm not sure. They've posted the illustration, gave me credit, and linked my blog in their article. I copied the link of the page into Google Translator. It mentions that I've been studying his death and so forth. Pretty neat!

    Silence Falls...

    This illustration is an editorial about the terrible events which lead to Alexander Litvinenko's death. He was poisoned with Polonium-210, a radioactive isotope. The isotope's radiation can not penetrate skin or paper, but if ingested, Polonium-210 will attack your most sensitive tissue and organs first... it only takes a bit as small as this period. He suffered for almost three weeks in a hospital bed with only the Russian government to accuse. In the meantime, traces of Polonium-210 are popping up around Europe. There are only TWO reactors in the world that are capable of producing the isotope... one is in Canada, the other in Russia. Both claim all of their Polonium is accounted for. The investigation continues...

    1.10.2007

    Welcome:: 2WENTY 0 SE7EN

    I hope everyone had a safe and happy new year. 2006... another one gone. My resolution this year is to keep developing my identity as an artist. I've absorbed so much visual information from the past and present. I'm still trying to process all the data that's been stockpiled over the years. This year, my goal is to truely explore "experience", "purpose" and "clarity". "Experience" is life. Life is a stuggle. Life is the common denominator between all of us. There must be a connection between the viewer and the illustration...something memorable.

    One Botched Attempt (updated)...

    This is an approach on doing a Constantine comic cover: GARDEN OF EVIL (an imaginary issue). So EVERY SINGLE layer was flattened some how. This is the result. I tried to save it. I orginally wanted it to have a lot more energy. Being the end of the semester, I really don't have the time (right now) to start it over. Maybe during break. We'll see...

    An open assignment from Perez landed me here, a project designing album art for a band called Red Sparowes. The CD's titled "At the Soundless Dawn". It's due at the end of class tomorrow around 3:30. Here we go...

    Cleaned it up with some value and color adjustments. I also got rid of the sloppy linework in the far row of trees... oh, and added a texture...

    11.12.2006

    A Wee Carpet Ride...

    This was basically an open assignment from Perez... he gave us a story and "do what you will" with it. I chose the flying aspect.

    10.22.2006

    Creepy Assignment...

    Perez gave us a quick assignment and had us illustrate "creepy"... Here's Medusa.

    10.15.2006

    Until Gwen...

    From the beginning, I had pictured the final illustration having a busy complexity that was easy to read... with an atmosphere. Through some constructive critiques from Ms. Cady Wachsman and Mr. Erik Jones, I continued exploring ways to unify all the busy elements. As of now (approx. 2:26am EST), I'm content... but we'll see.

    10.13.2006

    CONTRA for NES...

    Perez wanted us to redesign a board game/video game/etc., so I chose CONTRA (the original) for NES. I never owned it, but I played the shit out of if at my best friend Josh's house. Here's to nostalgia...

    10.05.2006

    As Expected...

    I think I'm finally done with this environment. I'm still working on the two supporting images. I'm thinking about approaching the whole project like a sci-fi textbook. The other two images will be "under the microscope" images showing a freaky caterpillar and a close-up of the floating spores as embryos maybe.

    10.04.2006

    Figure Anatomy with Aaron Board...

    9.29.2006

    Perez's Digital Illustration...

    This project was our choice. We just had to pick a series of three images (a primary piece with two supporting images). The result I think is interesting...I'm sure I'll revisit it after I give the image a chance to sink in. Enjoy!

    9.25.2006

    Thiel's Latest Assignment...

    This illustration is supposed to accompany one of two poems dealing with obesity. I approached it (again) as a cover illustration. I started with a very-close-to-finished drawing of the figure, then scanned it, along with the other elements of the piece. I messed around with color most of the night. Feedback is MUCH appreciated.

    9.22.2006

    Fictional Wine Label...

    This was an assignment given to our Advanced Computer Illustration class. Pick a wine, hot sauce or salad dressing label and redesign a new one (preferably). I was going for an edgier "Artist's Bottle" with some crappy text on the back.

    9.17.2006

    Revised Linework for Until Gwen...

    I've basicall started over on the linework. I didn't scrub the composition, just some of the shotty line qualities (or lack there of). I'm much happier with this version. Finished product is on the way.

    9.11.2006

    Linework for "Until Gwen"...

    This is an illustration for an assignment out of the Atlantic Monthly given to us by Joe Thiel. Just linework at this point... The final will be done Wednesday.

    9.06.2006

    Debator v2.0...

    I should've been working on current assignments, but...I printed the first version and it was way too dark with shotty contrast. I gave this version a warmer background to pop the figure out, a cast shadow of the figure onto the background, a figure which isn't so green, a little more red in the fleshtone, a touch more contrast and finally, I pushed the intensity of the light in his mouth and eyes.
    Thoughts?

    9.04.2006

    Self Portrait (finished?)...

    ...came a long way from last night...

    9.03.2006

    Self Portrait (in progress)...

    This is for my first project in Advanced Computer Illustration. Perez assigned us a self portrait to be possibly included in the Senior Illustration poster. I basically ripped the visuals I liked from the dominatrix piece. Originally, I was going to have large centipedes crawling out of my mouth and into my ear... like a nightmare or something. I wasn't really excited about doing centipedes because I kinda thought it was cheezy. Yeah, there's the gross factor, but that only goes so far. For now, I'm going with an image that has interesting visuals with a non-offensive concept. Your welcome, Mom.

    You Can't Handle the Truth...

    This illustration is a true story about a prosecuting lawyer in Massachusetts who put on the defendant's dominatrix mask in a recent murder trial. I thought it would be different to have a hallucinated visual from one of the juror's perspectives. I went with an older man who probably has no clue what a "dominatrix" is... a reserved and conservative perspective.
    Hope you enjoy!
    Feedback is much appreciated!

    Carpe La Diem...

    So this is a piece that I've had lined since March(?). I think I held off for so long because the piece was sitting on my easel, staring at me since March, burning that image into my head. I wanted to try Photoshop instead of my usual acrylics.
    The piece was supposed to be for an article about Jerry Fallwell's Liberty University debate team and their many victories over powerhouses such as Northwestern University and Harvard. The team sights scriptures from the Bible, arguing both sides of the debate (as debates are usually fought on two fronts). I suggested a pure light radiating from the debater's mouth, covering the microphone. The burgundy in the back suggests the tenacity of these debates.
    *Note: This image has been revisited since I first posted it.
    I was in a rush to post an image and didn't think about some critical issues (value/shadow shapes/color). I'm much more happier now.
    Hope you enjoy!

    Commisioned Portrait...

    I just finished this portrait. It took 4 1/2 hours. The guy gave me a TINY (1.5 x 1) picture and wanted me to blow it up to 18x24. So I did... There are some funny shapes and wierd edges, but I only asked for $200, so I wasn't gonna spend a lot of time on it. Feedback is appreciated, but I'm mainly just posting stuff.

    Phoenix Tattoo for a Friend...

    I finished working on this tattoo design for a friend at work who will be going to basic training for the NAVY. He wanted a bad ass japanese phoenix... this is the result. I wanted to give him the linework with some color shapes in the background. He and his tattoo artist can decide which colors they'd like to use. I've done one other tattoo design for someone at work and it was super cheezy... a crying Jesus, holding the world, tears falling. Pretty terrible! This one I enjoyed.

    Computer Illustration...

    This was done in 6 hours. 35 minutes of which were spent on the drawing. If you look into the reflection of the bottle, you can see me taking a picture. I did it last Fall semester in Mr. Perez's Computer Illustration class as our Still Life project in Painter.

    She's Got Enough Tongue for Ten Rows of Teeth...

    Dunnick told us to chose two of the ten Texas Sayings he gave us. This is the final tissue, I'll blow this up to 20"x28". I figured I push the meaning and work on it from an advertising and editorial standpoint. First I went with the 16 year old talking non-stop, then, I went with the receptionist type. Me thinks me landed betwixt the two. Watcha think?
    The final is on the way.

    First Assignment from Mr. Thiel...

    This self-portrait was inspired by a trip to the Annual Gross Anatomy at USF's Disection Lab.
    Every year Ringling is invited to participate in observational drawings of cadavers that have been disected by USF's med students.
    This assignment, a self-portrait was given to us by Joe Thiel at the beginning of the year.
    The image was based on fear rather than my personality. I thought waking up in a morgue, with half an autopsy performed would be pretty fucked up. So I started with the infamous Y-Incision, starting at each clavicle and down the center of the ribs. I could have used some better anatomical reference, but this'll do for now. I'm sure I'll touch back on this particular subject down the road.

    A Small Series From the Beginning of this Semester...

    This assignment was a story with a twist in 3 to 5 frames (the last frame revealing the twist).
    Frame 1: The scientists are performing an unknown experiment on an unknown object under the linen.
    Frame 2: They hoist the object into the massive thunderstorm, into the rain, and through the skylight.
    Frame 3: Ch-ch-ch-CHIA!
    I had some different ideas when I really got into the painting and got discouraged. I'd still like to work back into them... maybe this Summer. I'll re-post them if anything changes.
